Abundance

It is important to understand, first, what is meant by the term Abundance. Yes, abundance can translate into financial wealth. It also can correspond to health, relationships, and other forms of material wealth. What it means, basically, is that you have more than you need.

Mindset

Mindset refers to a person’s set of beliefs, attitudes, and assumptions that shape the way they perceive and interpret the world around them. It influences how individuals approach challenges, make decisions, and respond to various situations. Clearly, then, your mindset affects how you see and interact with the world around you. This in turn has a bearing on your results in life. So, it should come as no surprise that your mental outlook can impact your results in either a positive or negative manner.

Put the Two Together

An Abundance Mindset, in very brief terms, is the idea that there is enough of the good things in this world for everyone. That there is plenty of time, money, and resources available. At first glance, this seems strange to most of us, even ludicrous. Your mind is probably coming up with countless examples to the contrary. What about those fleeing a war or living homeless? Just know that we cannot live another’s experience, just as we don’t know what goes on in their minds. Also, realize that no amount of suffering or deprivation on your part helps anyone else. The only way to help anyone else become abundant is to start with your own abundance mindset and be an example.

How to Find the Abundance Mindset

Step 1 — Understand the Abundance Mindset

There are some common characteristics of an abundance mindset that are helpful to know. First, optimism and positivity are the driving factors behind the mindset. Second, abundance thinkers are resilient in the face of setbacks and adversity. As obstacles appear, they pivot or creatively re-route their journey. Finally, these thinkers are open to collaboration and sharing, since there is plenty to go around. Look for and encourage these attributes in your own development.

Step 2 — Transcend the Scarcity Mindset

We don’t want to dwell on or vilify the scarcity mindset. It is a necessary part of the evolution to abundance. However, it’s important to face and release any remaining scarcity thinking that appears in your mind. The scarcity mindset manifests itself through:

  • Fear of failure and the unknown
  • Jealousy and comparison with others
  • Hoarding resources due to the fear of running out

In order to release the scarcity mindset,  you can first recognize the negative thought patterns. Next, make the subtle but determined shift in focus from apparent lack to possible opportunities available. You accomplish this by quieting your mind through meditation or sitting peacefully and letting go. Then, you can begin to see opportunities around you. Rinse and repeat. Don’t forget to celebrate even small victories and successes.

Step 3 — Practice Gratitude, Visualization and Accepting Change

It is important to develop an attitude of gratitude and appreciation in everyday life. You can start by acknowledging the present moment’s blessings at any given time. The present moment is rich with opportunities for gratitude, even in the midst of apparent turmoil. Some have had great success with keeping a gratitude journal. You can use paper or do it electronically. Get in the habit of coming up with five or ten things you are grateful for. I’ve even made it a game with my family there we rotate until each one of us has spoken about five things we are grateful for. This is a great way to foster a positive outlook on life.

You can use visualization techniques to visualize your desired outcomes. Visualization has been scientifically proven to work in both sports and medicine. Giving the subconscious mind something to focus on is extremely effective. First, create a clear mental image of your desired outcomes, whatever they may be. If you are not a visual person by nature, you can include sounds, feelings, or sensations in your mind as well. Using this technique regularly will enhance your motivation and determination. I recommend something called a vision board. This is a cardboard poster sheet to which you have pasted cutout pictures of your desires.

Embracing change and learning are vital parts of an abundance mindset. Change is a chance for growth into new and better things. Also, be willing to learn from so-called “failures” and “mistakes”. You have to be ready to get back up on your feet again and again and again. Seek out new people and experiences in order to expand your life perspective.

Step 4 — Build Abundance in Relationships

In some sense, we become like the people we hang around. Seek out and find others with an abundance mindset to observe and learn from. You can grow together with them. Learn to see other people as potential partners, not competitors. Share your knowledge and resources generously, without a thought of getting something in return.

Consider more acts of kindness and giving. Random acts of kindness, where you don’t stand to benefit, are great long term abundance mindset boosters. Remember, there is always enough to go around. Helping others, whether in your family or through volunteer work, creates joy within. Also, you are creating a positive ripple effect in the community.

Look to heal difficult relationships with friends and family, if it makes sense in the particular situation. No, you should not tolerate abuse or bad behavior from anyone. But if all it means is admitting you might be wrong (even if you aren’t) or if you owe an apology, or need to forgive, go ahead and take the first step.

Step 5 — Nurture Your Abundant Self

The most important relationship is the one with yourself. Be kind to yourself. Sometimes we can be brutal on ourselves, with our mind dredging up the past. Let go of the past. There is nothing that can be done to change it. Always take care of your physical and mental well-being to the best of your ability. Combine alternative, spiritual, and mainstream medical healing as your intuition guides you in order to allow your body and mind to heal. There is an abundant supply of wellness on tap.

Take time for just yourself. Whether that means spiritual growth, reading, or hobbies, making that a priority will serve you. In particular, a spiritual or humanitarian path might bring you great peace and satisfaction that may be elusive with material wealth only.

Set appropriate goals and take inspired action to achieve them. Make sure you choose goals that are in alignment with your personal values, not someone else’s. To avoid being overwhelmed, you can break goals into manageable chunks that can be tackled daily. Always be sure to celebrate your progress, even for “minor” achievements.

Step 6 — Be Persistent in Uncovering Your True Abundant Nature

The one thing I can guarantee you is that you will run into challenges on your journey to discover your Abundance Mindset. Some times will be easier than others.  The key is to have a strong desire to uncover your true abundant nature, and to be committed to seeing it through. As mentioned in previous steps, you may have to pivot, re-route, get creative, etc. Look at failures and mistakes as merely learning experiences.
